Summer School Report 2018 (Inbound)

Let us share some of the memorable moments of students attending the 2018 Summer School. We hope more international students become interested in Japan and Gifu through our Summer School program that offers participants a great opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture and traditions.
We would like to take this opportunity to extend our deep appreciation to everyone supporting the program every summer.

 June 27, 2018  Orientation/Opening Ceremony/Welcome Party
The 2018 Summer School started on June 27. Thirteen students came to Gifu from five different countries. They are; four from Northern Kentucky University (U.S.), three from Mokpo National University (South Korea), two from Kasetsart University (Thailand), one from Guangxi University (China), one from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (China), and two from the National University of Malaysia (Malaysia). In the afternoon of June 27, the students took part in an orientation and a campus tour. They attended an opening ceremony in the evening, and enjoyed conversations with Gifu University student monitors, international students studying at the university at a welcome party.

 June 28, 2018  Placement Test/Toki Excursion
The students attended Japanese language classes from July 2 to 24. In the morning of June 28, they took a placement test for an assessment of their Japanese proficiency. In the afternoon, thanks to support from the Toki City International Exchange Association, they experienced pottery-making (sitting at a potter's wheel, painting, etc.) at Donburi Kaikan Hall at Toki City (Gifu).

 July 6, 2018 Seki Excursion
The students observed swordsmith demonstration at Seki Hamono Museum (Seki City, Gifu) and tried their hands in assembling the parts of small scissors. They later enjoyed kimono dressing.

 July 11, 2018 Nohgaku Workshop
Nohgaku (Noh and Kyogen Japanese traditional performing art) workshop was held on campus on July 11. The participants listened to the lectures about Noh from Mr. Madoka Mikata and Mr. Hiromichi Tamoi (both are main actors called "Shite" in Kanze School), and Kyogen from Mr. Kodo Yamaguchi and Mr. Chuzaburo Shigeyama (Kyogen drama performers in Okura School). After the lectures, the participants closely watched both Noh and Kyogen performances. They literally enjoyed "watching, listening and experiencing" the workshop.

 July 13 - 16, 2018 Gujo Program
Students took part in Gujo Program (held in Gujo City, Gifu) from July 13 to 16 with a kind support from the Gujo Hachiman International Friendship Association. This program covers various activities including cultural exchange and homestay, etc. The following are the details of the program:

 【Itinerary】
  July 13
   Morning: after arriving at Gujo City, students attended a tea ceremony
   Afternoon: visited Hachiman Elementary School, mingled with students, practiced kendo
          swordsmanship with Gujo Senior High School Kendo Club members, greeting
          with host families, stayed at their homes.
  July 14
   Morning: practiced Japanese calligraphy, enjoyed Yukata summer kimono dressing and
         Gujo dancing
   Afternoon: stayed at the homes of host families
  July 15
   Full Day: Spent with host families
  July 16
   Morning: discussions about the program, commemorative photo session
   Afternoon: arrived at Gifu University

 July 19, 2018 Sumo Watching
 Students watched Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament on July 28.

 July 25, 2018 Presentation/Essay Writing/Wrap-Up Meeting/Closing Ceremony/Farewell Party
On the final day of the program, students made group presentations about most memorable things or events took place during the program. Those who attended classes (80% or more in attendance) were handed out a certificate of completion, A closing ceremony was followed by a farewell party where students gave a speech about their program impressions in Japanese before their host families, President Hisataka Moriwaki and student monitors.
