Bachelor's Degree Programs

Each of the five faculties at Gifu University offers bachelor's degree programs. Students enrolled in one of the faculties normally study for four years. At the completion of the program, students will be awarded a bachelor degree. Students enrolled in the Medical Course, School of Medicine or the Veterinary Medicine Course, Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences are expected to study for six years to complete the program of study.

Language of Instruction

Most classes at Gifu University are taught in Japanese, unless specified as otherwise. Those who wish to enroll in an undergraduate program must have sufficient proficiency in Japanese upon entering the University.
There is no faculty for Japanese Language learning at Gifu University. It is highly recommended to acquire high level of Japanese proficiency before entering the University.

Admission Requirements(Privately-Financed International Students)

Application procedure for Japanese Government Scholarship Studetns is here.

You must meet the following (1), (2) and (3). Moreover, you must have taken the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), conducted by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) and TOEFL. Applicants for admission to the Faculty of Regional Studies are not required to take TOEFL. As the test subjects that applicants must take differ according to the faculty, you are requested to confirm the conditions on our website. Details are offered in July every year.

(1)Those who do not hold a Japanese nationality

(2)Those who satisfy one of the following 5 categories

a) Those who have completed twelve years of school education overseas.

b) Those recognized as having academic ability equivalent to the above and who are approved by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

c) Those who have obtained the International Baccalaureate given by the Baccalaurean Office in Switzerland and have reached the age of eighteen.

d) Those who have been awarded an Abitur by Federal Republic of Germany and become eighteen years old.

e) Those who have been awarded an Baccalaureate by French Republic and become eighteen years old.

(3)Those who have a "College Student" status under the Immigration-Control and Refugee-Recognition Act or are expected to hold a "College Student" status

Application Procedures and Entrance Examination

Please obtain an application form (Japanese only) * from the Admission Division, Educational Affairs Department. Detailed information on the application procedures and entrance examination is provided in the application form. The application forms are available from mid-October.
If you wish to have an application form mailed to you, please refer to here (in Japanese).
The application procedures, date, place and method of examination vary with the faculty and the year.



Master's and Doctoral Degree Programs

There are two programs in the Graduate School, one is the Master's Degree Program and the other is the Doctoral Degree Program.

Master's Degree Program

A Master's degree is awarded to those who successfully complete two years of required course work and research, pass the final comprehensive examination, and have their thesis accepted.

Admission Requirements

For details, please contact the graduate school which you want to enter.

(1) Those who have graduated from a university/college and obtained a bachelor's degree in Japan.

(2) Those who have completed a 16-year course of school education overseas.

(3) Those who have completed a 16-year course of school education overseas from correspondence education which is offered by a foreign institution in Japan.

(4) Those who have completed a 15-year course of school education overseas and whose credits and grades are recognized as outstanding by the graduate school of Gifu University.

(5) Those who are recognized by the graduate school as being of academic ability equivalent or superior to university graduates and moreover have reached the age of 22 years old.

(6) In addition, those who have been evaluated by the school as having academic capability equivalent or superior to university graduates.

Doctoral Degree Program

A Doctor's degree is awarded to those who successfully complete three years of required course work and research, pass the final comprehensive examination, and have their thesis accepted. The required term of study for students enrolled in the Graduate School of Medicine (Programs for Medical Sciences) and the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences is normally four years.

(1) Those who have obtained a master's degree in Japan.

(2) Those who have been awarded a degree equivalent or superior to a master's degree by an overseas educational institution.

(3) Those who have a degree equivalent to a master's degree from correspondence education which is offered by an overseas educational institution in Japan.

(4) Those who have been recognized by the graduate school as being of academic ability equivalent or superior to those who have a master's degree and furthermore have reached the age of 24 years old.

(5) In addition, those who have been evaluated by the institution as having academic capability equivalent or superior to a master's degree.

Admission Requirements for Doctoral Degree Programs at the Graduate Schools of Medicine (Programs for Medical Sciences) and the United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences

For details, please contact the graduate school which you want to enter.

(1) Those who have graduated from a school of medicine, a school of dentistry or a 6-year course of veterinary science.

(2) Those who have completed a 18-year course of school education overseas (the last course must be one in medical science, dentistry or veterinary science).

(3) Those who have completed a 18-year course of school education (the last course must be one in medical science, dentistry or veterinary science) from correspondence education which is offered by an overseas educational institution in Japan.

(4) Those who have been evaluated by the institution as being of academic ability equivalent or superior to those who have graduated from a school of medicine, a school of dentistry or a 6-year course of veterinary science and moreover have reached the age of 24 years old.

Application Procedures and Entrance Examination

A person wishing to be admitted into either the Master's program or the Doctoral program must take an entrance examination. The application procedures, date, place and method of examination vary with the graduate school and the year. For further information, please contact the faculty office of each graduate school.

【One-point Advice】

Most of international graduate students at our University start their study as a research student, prepare for the Graduate Entrance Examination for six months to one year, and are admitted as a graduate student.
