Student-Built Flying Robots Compete for the Top Spot at the Tokai Climax Series 2026

The Intelligent Production Technology Research & Development Centner for Aerospace (IPTeCA) at Gifu University held the Tokai Climax Series 2026, a competition among top-performing student-built flying robots (autonomous gliders), on September 18, 2026 at the Yamagata City General Gymnasium, Gifu Prefecture.

Originally launched by Gifu University and Nagoya University, the event expanded last year to include the College of Naka-Nippon Aviation (Gifu), and this year welcomed the National Institute of Technology, Gifu College. A total of six teams comprising 25 students participated, competing in the flight performance of autonomous gliders designed and built by the students themselves. The event attracted 145 visitors, including stakeholders and members of the public, who enthusiastically watched the intense competition.

Under challenging conditions that included airflow disturbances generated by large fans, each team attempted three flights. As a result, the team from the College of Naka-Nippon Aviation won the championship with an overall score of 55.7 points and also received the Design Award, which was determined by a vote of attendees. The National Institute of Technology, Gifu College secured second place with a score of 48.2 points.

The event also featured an exhibition flight by a volunteer team from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., drawing considerable attention from spectators. Following the competition, participating students reviewed flight recordings, analyzed the performance of their aircraft, and exchanged ideas and feedback. These activities not only deepened their understanding of flying robot technologies and engineering principles but also fostered meaningful interaction among students from different institutions.

Gifu University will continue to provide hands-on educational programs of this kind to enhance students' creativity and problem-solving abilities while cultivating the next generation of professionals who will contribute to the growth and advancement of regional industries.
