MEDC's 89th Medical Education Seminar & Workshop
In collaboration with Aichi Medical University (Aichi Prefecture), the Medical Education Development Center (MEDC) at Gifu University held the 89th Medical Education Seminar & Workshop on Saturday, October 26, 2024. A total of eight workshops and seminars were conducted, with 125 people attending, including lecturers.
In the seminar "Entrepreneurship Education in Schools of Medicine," a guest speaker, Dr. IKENO Fumiaki from Stanford University, the United States, introduced the "Stanford Biodesign Program," an entrepreneurial training course for the medical device business. Located at the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford University focuses on continuously developing human resources that meet societal needs and nurturing the next generation of leaders, who are capable of creating medical device businesses. Although such initiative may typically be done in private companies, it contributes to society by producing individuals who can develop medical devices that may save patients worldwide. This seminar provided an opportunity to introduce a new practical example that differs from the approach to human resource development in Japanese medical schools. Participants praised the seminar, saying, "The topic of entrepreneurship was refreshing and inspiring," and "I was deeply motivated by his speech, giving me a sense of 'sit up straight.'"
In a workshop titled "Let's Think About Entrepreneurship Education in Medical Universities," after presentation of practical examples from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, participants exchanged opinions on the feasibility of entrepreneurship education in the training programs at medical universities.
In the other seven workshops, participants shared feedback such as, "It was refreshing to have the opportunity to interact with professionals from various fields that we don't usually interact with," "Being able to practice the lecture content through group work makes it easier to implement in clinical settings from the next day," and "Hearing opinions from different universities broadened my perspective." As a joint utilization center for medical education, MEDC holds the "Medical Education Seminar & Workshop" three times a year to contribute to the dissemination, development, and improvement of medical education in Japan.
The next, 90th session, will be held online on Thursday, January 23, and Friday, January 24, 2025. Participant registration will be available on the MEDC website starting December 2, 2024.
