Associate Professor Miyawaki Shingo has been awarded the 2024 MEXT Young Scientists' Prize

Associate Professor MIYAWAKI Shingo, from the Joint Department of Veterinary Medicine in the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences at Gifu University, has been awarded the 2024 Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Young Scientists' Prize. This prestigious award recognizes young researchers aged 40 years and under who have made remarkable contributions to science and technology. Their outstanding aptitude for exploratory and creative research with unique ideas is celebrated, aiming to encourage the next generation of scientists and advance science and technology in Japan. Dr. Miyawaki research focuses on gene structures that determine the sex of mammals and the evolution of sex-determining genes. His successful achievements have been acknowledged and honored through the 2024 MEXT prize.

On Friday, April 26, 2024, Dr. Miyawaki reported his award to President YOSHIDA Kazuhiro of Gifu University. In his meeting with the president, Dr. Miyawaki explained that his research results may help resolve the mystery of sex determination in mammals and contribute to our understanding of evolution of sex-determining genes (Sry) in the future. Dr. Miyawaki said, "As a native of Gifu, I am extremely honored to receive the MEXT prize while working at Gifu University. I continue to inspire young researchers from my generation and think about how we can best contribute to Gifu together."

President Yoshida congratulated Dr. Miyawaki on his award and said, "Wining of the MEXT Young Scientists' Prize 2024 is undoubtedly a lifetime asset for Dr. Miyawaki. His award also holds a significant meaning for the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences, for Gifu University, and for Gifu Prefecture. Additionally, it marks a significant milestone for the Tokai National Higher Education and Research System and the Center for One Medicine Innovative Translational Research (COMIT), as well as joint research programs with other universities. I hope that Dr. Miyawaki will spearhead the growth and development of diverse research fields in the days to come." Gifu University continues to foster young researchers and support their activities.
