MEDC's 85th Medical Education Seminar & Workshop

The Medical Education Development Center (MEDC), Gifu University hosted the "85th Medical Education Seminar & Workshop (conducted online)" for three days from Wednesday, May 24 to Friday, May 26, 2023. The 24th National and Private University's Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry Administrative Staff Training was also held in parallel with the 85th seminar and workshop. A total of 267 people including lecturers attended six workshops and webinars for three days.

In the workshops, the participants discussed themes such as "Let's learn together the basics of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)," "Dialogues can facilitate smooth communications among different professions," and "What does diversity mean to medical students ?; from the viewpoint of socioeconomic disparities."

The discussion session for the "Let's learn together the basics of Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)" was organized as a joint session with the National and Private University's Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry Administrative Staff Training. At the outset, the participants studied the basics of OSCE. Later, they listened to the actual cases of OSCE operations and engaged in discussions from their own perspectives. Information exchange followed by the participants attending from across Japan concerning the differences of OSCE in medicine and dentistry, and their views on OSCE operations.

The "Cross Talk" is the new program introduced at this 85th seminar and workshop. Under the title, "New insights brought by the arts into medicine and medical education," Dr. HIBINO Katsuhiko (President of Tokyo University of the Arts, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, GIFU) who was invited as guest speaker, and Professor SAIKI Takuya (MEDC Director) shared their ideas on the following: how to integrate artistic values of diversity, individuality and innovations into medicine where observation of strict rules and the standards are always required with accuracy, as well as interpretations of medicine by the people in the world of arts.

As a joint usage/research center for medical education, MEDC holds a medical education seminar and workshop three times a year for promotion, development and improvement of medical staff education in Japan. The "86th Medical Education Seminar & Workshop" will be co-sponsored by the University of Toyama from Friday, October 6 to Saturday, October 7, 2023. Applications are accepted through the MEDC website from late August, 2023.
