The Seventh River Basin Conservation Research Promotion Seminar

The River Basin Research Center of Gifu University hosted the "Seventh River Basin Conservation Research Promotion Seminar" on Friday, March 10, 2023. It was conducted both on-and offline to prevent the Covid infections, and most of the presenters and participants attended the seminar via a video link platform. A total of 90 people including 70 from outside of campus attended the seminar.

The River Basin Research Center has been tackling regional and global environmental agendas to meet SDGs1 and attain carbon neutrality in cooperation with domestic and international research institutes and its extensive research networks. The seminar opened for people to share research results and the latest developments of joint research activities, and to discuss further advancement of river basin sciences in the future.

On March 10, the seminar started with an opening speech by Professor Li Fusheng, Director of the Center, which was followed by the first special session titled, "Forest remote sensing and research prospect on prediction of climate change." In the session, Professor AWAYA Yoshio gave his final lecture before his retirement. The title of the lecture was "Forest remote sensing: my 43-year experiences and dreams."

Next, the following three guest speakers delivered their speech:

- Dr. HAYASHI Masato and Dr. OCHIAI Osamu from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency

- Dr. MOROZUMI Tomoki from the National Institute for Environmental Studies

The session continued with discussions by staff members of the Center's joint research support office on the latest development of research and future prospects of satellite ecology in Japan and abroad.

In the first part of the second session, research presentations were made by researchers at the Center (three from Division of Forest Function, two from Division of Water and Material Dynamics, and one from the Office for Promotion of Regional Collaboration and Disaster Mitigation). Visiting Professor Du Zhiping of the Center who is from Shanxi University, China, gave a lecture on his research results on water and material dynamics.

In the second part of the session, staff members presented activity reports representing their respective divisions, namely, Takayama Field Station, microorganism analysis office, water quality analysis office, and Gifu University Rearing Program for Basin Water Environmental Leaders and the seminar ended with the closing remarks by Professor Li Fusheng.

The River Basin Research Center continues to host the seminar annually to establish river basin sciences and promote practical river basin conservation studies for adaptation of changing environment and to address environmental issues.
