Award Overview

Professor Toshiaki Murai, Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering, Gifu University, received the "Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry Award (Academic)."

The Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry Awards was established in 1959 to recognize researchers who have made significant contributions to the development of synthetic organic chemistry or synthetic organic chemistry-related industries. No more than two research achievements are selected for each technical field. This year, the award was bestowed upon Professor Murai. The title of the award is "Development of reactions based on unsaturated bonds of main group elements and their applications to functional molecules".

On February 16th (Wednesday), an award ceremony was held online, followed by an award commemorative lecture.

Reserch Summary

In this award-winning study, in addition to hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms, the elements such as phosphorus, sulfur, and selenium belonging to the third and fourth rows in the Periodic Table participate in the constructions of new worlds of synthetic molecules and of synthetic reactions. The methods developed provide new phenomena and new synthesis of drug candidates.

Figure. Change of emission color due to grinding and exposure to steam

For example, as shown in the figure on the right, the color of a compound showing orange emission with irradiation of an ultraviolet lamp in a solid state changes to dull by grinding it with a mortar for 15 minutes. Exposure of the dull color solid to acetone vapor for 3 minutes provides white-light emission.
