"Tomato production in a greenhouse with computer-automated environmental control is in operation" at Gifu Field Science Center, Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences
A new greenhouse as smart agriculture-system is in operation at Gifu Field Science Center, Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences. This greenhouse is 216 m2, and is capable of growing 360 plants by rockwool substrate system under properly controlled environment through ICT systems. Various greenhouse environments (air temperature, relative humidity, substrate water content, pH & EC of nutrient solution, light intensity, and CO2 concentration) and control operation statuses (irrigation rate, ventilator openings, CO2 supply rate, heat pump loading, and LED inter-lighting) are constantly monitored, and the farmer and students can monitor the current and past cultivation conditions via the Internet website.
On Thursday, November 25, 2021, the greenhouse opened to the university staff and they were briefed by Professor Teruaki Shimazu (Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences) regarding the functions/mechanism of the greenhouse. Participants expressed their high expectations for this greenhouse as smart agriculture system for future joint education with Nagoya University as well as promotion of cutting-edge agricultural technologies.
This greenhouse is mainly used as a facility for agricultural training for Gifu University students. It is also used as an extension course for students from other universities, nearby elementary, junior high and high schools, and the general public.
