The 7th UGSVS Open Lecture: "Caring for Aging Companion Animals"
The United Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences (UGSVS) hosted the 7th open lecture titled, "Caring for Aging Companion Animals" on Thursday, March 4, 2021.
Due to concerns for COVID-19 infections, only a limited number of people were allowed into the lecture venue through prior registration, and the lecture was offered online as well. A total of 41 people attended the lecture including members of Gifu Veterinary Medical Association and Gifu University staff, etc.
UGSVS hosts open lectures once a year in order to discuss the latest issues in veterinary sciences, to share relevant information with citizens, medical and veterinary experts in the community, and to exchange opinions and views between medical experts and residents.
Up to the 6th open lectures, most of the discussions focused on infections which could affect both humans and animals in line with the concept, "One Health." Under this concept, medicine, veterinary sciences and public health are expected to work together for the benefits of both humans and animals. However, in the 7th open lecture, we chose the theme, "Caring for Aging Companion Animals."
Thanks to great advancements of veterinary sciences, and better living environment for pet animals, animals tend to live a long life today. Their presence may be a great joy for pet owners, but as they age, they are becoming more vulnerable to various age-related ailments and senile behaviors. The lecture was held to help people become more aware of aging of animals so that both owners and their companion animals live longer together.
In the following discussion session, many questions were raised form the audience such as their sad experiences of taking care of dying pets. People attending the lecture shared their experiences and were listening to the comments and advice from the lecturers.
