Professor Fumiaki Nin, Department of Physiology, Graduate School of Medicine receives Toray Science and Technology Grant

Professor Fumiaki Nin (Department of Physiology, Graduate School of Medicine, Gifu University) has been selected to receive the 61st Toray Science and Technology Grant of Toray Science Foundation. The Toray Science and Technology Grants provide financial assistance to creative young researchers engaging in basic research in Japan whose results are expected to contribute to the progress of science and technology.*

By conducting physiological experiments and using the knowledge of computing sciences, Professor Nin has been working for understanding the mechanism of cochlea** whose breakdown could cause hearing impairments. The research theme he won the 61st Toray Science and Technology Grant is to challenge the mystery of cochlea's sound amplifying functions by capturing its cells' cross-sectional images and using nano-meter scale vibration measurements with the highest accuracy. The development of state-of-the-art measurement instrument for his research is being realized through close collaboration between medical biology and engineering.

If his new measurement technique is established, researchers can conduct biomedical measurement for other organs even without having any physical contact with the living subject. The technique is expected to be used for a wide range of ailments, and result in developing new medical treatments in the future.
