Bricon Circle wins at Asia Steel Bridge Competition 2019

Members of Gifu University Bricon Circle ranked 2nd at "Asia Steel Bridge Competition 2019" held in Indonesia from August 24 to 27, 2019. They won all six divisions out of seven (structure costs, installation costs, total costs, deflection prediction, aesthetics, presentation, and general divisions) in the competition.

This competition started in 2008 with the following objectives: promotion of international exchange among university students, offering students an opportunity to use their expertise on bridge engineering, and developing engineering designs. In the competition, performances of participants are evaluated by bridge functionality, aesthetics, presentations as well as construction costs through bridge-building simulation and bridge models.

Gifu University joined the competition in 2011 for the first time and won the first prize. GU team also won the first prize the following 2012. After two consecutive years' victory, GU students created a new circle called, "Bricon Circle" in 2019 and took part in the competition.

On December 18, 2019, together with Associate Professor Kouji Kinoshita (Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering) who coached the students, the members reported the team's victory to President Hisataka Moriwaki in his office. One student remarked, "Although we failed to win the first prize, second best ranking in the competition means a lot to us given that many high-performers competed with one another. We spent almost double the time getting prepared for the competition 2019. Our team is planning to attend another international competition held in Canada next year."

"I hope not only the Faculty of Engineering students but also students across campus can participate in the future competitions as a member of Bricon Circle. I look forward to your best performance in Canada, too," said President Moriwaki
