Delegation from the University of South Florida visits Gifu University

Thirty students from the University of South Florida (USF) visited Gifu University from May 23 to 25, 2018. USF is one of the largest universities in the United States with a current student population of 48,000. The General Agreement for Collaboration between Gifu University School of Medicine, Health Administration Center and the University of South Florida was signed in October 2016.

After their arrival, the students were first invited to attend the Welcome Lunch Party held at the Memorial Hall of the School of Medicine. It was hosted by the Nursing Course staff. From Gifu University, Dr. Toru Iwama, Dean/Professor of the School of Medicine, Dr. Kazuhiro Yoshida, Director/Professor of the Gifu University Hospital, and the teaching and administrative staff of the Health Administration Center and the Nursing Course, as well as 78 students of the course took part in the party. The following are the events and activities organized for the guest students:

- join the "Medical English I" class for the 3rd year students of the Nursing Course, and play a role of patients in the consultations between nurses and patients
- attend the lecture by Dr. Mayumi Yamamoto, Director/Professor of the Health Administration Center (HAC), "National Health Insurance System and University Health Management in Japan"
- Tour of the University Hospital

On May 24, the students visited a number of medical and welfare facilities within Gifu Prefecture and also enjoyed watching the cormorant fishing on the Nagara River. Through their participation in these social events and study activities, the students have built a strong friendship with the School of Medicine students and the administrative staff.

On the final day of the program on May 25, the students visited Hachiman Elementary School in Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture and shared school lunch with the pupils and engaged in cleanup activities there.

Dr. Matawal Makut, Instructor of USF Health, Professor Atsuko Sakai, Instructor of USF Honors College, and Dr. Benjamin Young, Instructor of USF Honors College, made a courtesy visit to Dr. Hisataka Moriwaki, President of Gifu University. Dr. Fumiaki Suzuki, Executive Director for International Affairs and Public Relations, Dr. Mayumi Yamamoto, Director/Professor of HAC, Dr. Yayoi Tajima, Associate Professor of Nursing Course School of Medicine, Dr. Akihiro Nishio, Associate Professor of HAC, Dr. Ryo Horita, Assistant Professor of HAC, and Ms. Haruko Nonomura, Director for International Affairs and Planning, attended the meeting. In the meeting, President Moriwaki exchanged opinions with the attendees concerning the promotion of student and staff exchange between the two universities. After the meeting, all thirty students shook hands with President Moriwaki one by one, and were handed out small gifts from him. A strong, enduring relationship between the University of South Florida and Gifu University particularly in the fields of education, research and clinical practices are expected with the delegation's latest visit to Gifu University.
