The 5th Press Conference by the President for AY 2017

The 5th Press Conference by the President for AY 2017 was held on September 20, 2017.

First, President Hisataka Moriwaki spoke about "Typhoon Path Analysis Technique Developed - expectations for highly-accurate forecasting of numerically unpredictable typhoons and line-shaped precipitation bands" in association with "Gifu University Future Vision Towards 2025." Next, Professor Shuichi Nonomura, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering gave a summary of this topic, which was followed by Associate Professor Jun Yoshino, Director of the Applied Meteorological Research Center introducing the research programs and projects now underway at the center.

Prof. Yoshino has successfully developed the pioneering typhoon path analysis technique. In the process of development, he paid attentions to "potential vorticity" and calculated the whole potential vorticity in and around a typhoon from 3-dimensional data of wind velocity, temperature and atmospheric pressure. He then divided it into six different types of potential vorticity and narrowed down the wind velocities that five types of potential vorticity (excluding the potential vorticity of the typhoon per se) could generate and may alter typhoon paths. With his new discovery, it is possible for forecasters to make more accurate predictions about typhoons and line-shaped precipitation bands whose directions are sometimes beyond the scope of assumptions.

The Applied Meteorological Research Center opened in April, 2017 with atmosphere-ocean, atmosphere-electricity and atmosphere-hydrosphere research divisions. The center is Japan's first on-campus research entity of applied meteorology.

It is our strong hope that meteorological data obtained by the center will become highly evaluated after application of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) including AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoT (Internet of Things), and the center's activities can pave the way for launching many new meteorological information-related business conducive to increased productivities in regions in the foreseeable future.
