Director of the Spanish Japanese Cultural Center, University of Salamanca pays courtesy call on President Moriwaki

Dr. Jose-Abel Flores Villarejo, Director of the Spanish Japanese Cultural Center, University of Salamanca, Spain paid a courtesy call on President Hisataka Moriwaki on June 21, 2017. He was accompanied by Ms. Asami Miotani, Assistant Secretary General of La Asociacion Universidad de Salamanca en Japan and Mr. Hirano of the Department of Environmental Affairs and Citizen Support, Gifu Prefectural Government. From Gifu University, Dr. Fumiaki Suzuki, Executive Director for International Affairs and Public Relations, Ms. Haruko Nonomura, Director for International Affairs and Planning and Mr. Yusuke Kowaki of the Inbound and Outbound Student Affairs Office were in attendance.

University of Salamanca is one of the oldest universities in Europe, and will celebrate the 800th Anniversary in 2018. The number of students is approximately 30,000. Gifu Prefecture and City of Salamanca have forged a strong tie since Mr. Hiroshi Tsuji (native of Shirakawa, Gifu Prefecture) installed the perfect Spanish-style organ (first in Japan) at Gifu prefectural concert hall "Salamanca Hall." Mr. Tsuji is highly regarded for his restoration of a pipe organ at Salamanca Cathedral, Spain.
In 2018, to celebrate University of Salamanca's 800th anniversary, a number of symposiums as well as music events at Salamanca Hall are under planning in Gifu Prefecture.

During the meeting, President Moriwaki and Dr. Jose-Abel Flores Villarejo briefly introduced Gifu University and University of Salamanca with each other, and later discussed organization of symposiums and student and faculty exchange between the two universities.

The delegates were also invited to the office of Dr. Suzuki for further discussions, which was joined by Professor Masayuki Niwa, Dean of the United Graduate School of Drug Discovery and Medical Information Sciences. They talked about planning of symposiums and a signing of university-level agreement in the near future. At the end of the meeting, the participants agreed with the specifics of a joint symposium organized and hosted by University of Salamanca, Gifu Pharmaceutical University and Gifu University.

The delegation later visited Gifu Pharmaceutical University with which University of Salamanca already concluded the university-level agreement.

Gifu University and University of Salamanca will continue to hold talks regarding signing the university-level agreement including Gifu Pharmaceutical University. It is expected that Gifu University and University of Salamanca will remain strongly engaged in facilitating various exchanges in a wide range of fields in the years to come.
