Job-seeking support project for patients who need long-term medical treatment kicks off

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare has been stationing professional consultants (called, "Job-Seeking Navigator") at the public employment security offices ("Hello Work") from 2013. This is part of job-seeking support measures for patients wishing to remain workforce to find a purpose in life, or to earn a living while receiving long-term medical treatment for cancer or other diseases.
The Ministry introduced the "Long-term Patients Job-Seeking Support Model Project" across the country in cooperation with a cancer treatment cooperation base hospital in each region, and Gifu Prefecture has started to implement this project from this year.

Gifu University Hospital is designated as a cancer treatment cooperation base hospital within Gifu Prefecture, and at the Cancer Consultation Support Center of the Hospital a navigator began to provide a consultation service to patients from October 1 (service is available for patients by advance reservation only).

The navigator gives advice to the people wishing to find work while receiving long-term treatment due to cancer, hepatitis, diabetes, etc. Among others, if they fall into the following categories, the navigator assists people in landing a job:

1. People are out of work after being dismissed
2. People remain in workforce but are forced to be dismissed
3. People have no or little work experience
