Medical Education Development Center (MEDC) holds The 60th Medical Education Seminar & Workshop

The Medical Education Development Center (MEDC) and the Faculty of Medical Education, Tokyo Medical University co-organized "The 60th Medical Education Seminar & Workshop in Tokyo Medical University" on May 21 and 22, 2016. Around 200 participants and lecturers came from across the country, and took part in seven workshops, panel discussions and seminars for two days in Tokyo.

To mark the 60th anniversary of this Seminar & Workshop, Ms. Saori Yabumoto from University Reform Promotion Office, University Promotion Division, Higher Education Bureau, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports Science and Technology, delivered a keynote speech. After the speech, the 1st "MEDC Fellow & Associate" Certificate Award Ceremony was held. This is a new program launched by the MEDC to promote its core functions as a collaboration center for medical education in Japan.

In the Workshop, opinions were actively exchanged over a variety of themes on medical education including e-learning, clinical training, institutional research, simulated English-speaking patient treatment, simulation education, accreditation system and LGBTs.

In the Seminar, Dr. R. Breugelmans, Associate Professor of Tokyo Medical University gave a speech titled, "Future of Medical Education Using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) - Towards the Next Stage." Dr. Breugelmans talked about building a better future by sharing e-learning materials and the challenges ahead in view of new ICT education method already taken root in society today.

In the panel discussions, the first attempt in the long history of this seminar & workshop, about 70 participants had a chance to deepen their understanding about the definition and the mechanism of "human empathy" under the guidance of six panelists. They later extensively discussed how far medical students and staff can acquire a sense empathy for others and what kind of education would be necessary to acquire such sense.

The MEDC holds a medical education seminar & workshop four times a year for the promotion, development and improvement of medical education in this country as a collaboration center for medical education in Japan.

The 61st Medical Education Seminar & Workshop is held at the School of Medicine, Gifu University from August 19 to 21, 2016.
