Exchange lounge tutors of International Student Center organized Tanabata Festival

An exchange lounge tutor-organized event, Tanabata Festival, was held on Wednesday afternoon, July 9th. Tanabata is the star festival celebrated on July 7th, and people make a wish on a star. Lounge tutors organize events regularly, and its purpose is to provide cultural experiences to international students and to promote the exchange between international and Japanese students.

About 40 people including international students, Japanese students, and summer school students from Sweden and South Korea attended the event. This year, the number of participants was fewer than past years due to the heavy rain caused by typhoon, and the event was held after tanabata day, so the date of the event could be another reason of fewer participants.
Following an opening speech from a tutor, students wrote their wishes or anything in their mind on prepared strips of paper in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and so on, and hung them on branches of bamboo trees to make their wishes come true. Some of their wishes are "I want to improve my Japanese", "I want to continue studying in Japan", and "world peace".
In this event, origami art was very popular among participating students, and a group of students enjoyed folding origami papers at each table. International students learned how to make a paper crane or a samurai warrior helmet from Japanese students, and international students taught the way of making a paper rose in return. Participating students enjoyed the exchange through origami and wrapped up the event with a photo session.
We hope the event contributed to expand the international exchange of students.

The exchange lounge in International Student Center was established to promote international exchange at Gifu University, and it is a place for study support for international students (mainly Japanese language and culture studies) and for communication for international and Japanese students. Lounge tutors stand by for international students to support their studies in afternoon on weekdays.
