Second Press Conference by President AY 2019

Gifu University held the second press conference by President Hisataka Moriwaki AY 2019 on May 20, 2019.

At the outset, President Moriwaki talked about the research activities of the Center for Highly Advanced Integration of Nano and Life Sciences (G-CHAIN) and its roles in Gifu University's Future Vision toward 2025. It was followed by the overviews of the center given by Professor Hideharu Ishida (director of the center), Professor Kenichi Suzuki, Professor Hiromune Ando, Associate Professor Yasuhiko Kizuka. They introduced the transition of the center since its establishment in October 2016.

The center conducts basic research and medical science for cancer and Alzheimer's disease in relation to glycans (sugar chains) by using three distinctive technologies, "single molecule imaging of glycans,"(specialized by Professor Suzuki), "synthetic chemistry of glycans" (Professor Ando) and "biochemistry of glycans."(Associate Professor Kizuka)

When the center opened, there were only five researchers, but the number has grown up to fourteen to date. With three research papers published in Science and Nature sister journals, and securing large external funds, the center, while rooted in Gifu University, is expected to further accelerate its research activities as a hub for nanotechnology and life sciences of the Tokai National University System.

"Creating the world's best glycoscience research base in both name and substance is our dream." said Professor Ando.

An international conference is scheduled to be held on June 3 to 4, 2019 with participation of researchers and scholars at home and abroad. Presentations of successful glycoscience research achievements and the integration of the three technologies (single molecule imaging, synthetic chemistry and biochemistry) are the major themes of the conference.
