The 2nd International Workshop 2015 by UGSAS

The United Graduate School of Agricultural Science (UGSAS) held the 2nd International Workshop with the cooperation of Gifu University's Graduate school of Applied Biological Sciences and Sebelas Maret University (UNS), at Solo Paragon Hotel (Solo, Indonesia) for two days from November 30 to December 1, 2015. This workshop began last year with the purpose of promoting the globalization of Gifu University as well as exchanges with local businesses. The 2nd workshop was supported by the OGAWA Science and Technology Foundation.

The first day of this year's workshop was held at Solo Paragon Hotel along the main theme of "Biological Environmental Science." The workshop included following programs: keynote lectures by Professor Dr. Ravik Karsidi, M.S, President of UNS, and Dr. Fumiaki Suzuki, Executive Director for International Affairs and Public Relations of Gifu University; an introduction to UGSAS by Dean Masateru Senge and Professor Yuzuru Mukai; research presentations by Professor Ken Hiramatsu, Associate Professor Takeo Onishi, Assistant Professor Isao Hirota; and from UNS, research presentations and an introduction of Experimental Stations for Rivers, a local company in Indonesia. Around 110 people who attended the Workshop, listened attentively to the lectures and presentations, and actively exchanged ideas and opinions.
In addition, Mr. Chihiro Sako, Section Chief of the International Planning Division of Gifu University, and Mr. Taufiq Al Makmun, MA, Director of the International Office of UNS, took this opportunity to meet and talk about future exchanges and international projects that the universities are working on together.
A general discussion session also took place where UNS master's students and researchers and people from local businesses exchanged information on their research with one another. This session became a venue to promote the globalization of research exchange.

On the Second day, the delagates from Gifu University visited National Plantation Company IX Tasikmadu Branch, a sugar refining plant. Mr. Teguh Agung Tri Nugroho presented an overview of the company, and this was followed by a video showing the sugar refining process and a plant tour.
On the same day, a bilateral seminar by doctoral students took place at UNS. After greetings from Professor Kohei Nakano, Senior Tutor of UGSAS, Mr. Takuo Kamiya and Mr. Hiroki Ito gave presentations that doubled as their research internship reports at PT. Great Giant Pineapple, a major pineapple farming company.
In the afternoon, the delegates checked in on the Gifu University Office set up within UNS and held an opening ceremony for a joint laboratory. Professor Dr. Samanhudi of UNS and Dean Senge of Gifu University cut the ribbon and observed the experimental equipment that UGSAS bought for the laboratory. This joint laboratory will be open to faculty and students of IC-GU12* under the supervision of Associate Professor Widyatmani Sih Dewi of UNS (a visiting associate professor at Gifu University) as a research hub for environmental and science research.
