President YOSHIDA Kazuhiro of Gifu University Receives the 31st NAKAYAMA Koumei Award
President YOSHIDA Kazuhiro of Gifu University has been awarded the 31st NAKAYAMA Koumei Award at the 63rd Annual Meeting of the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology. This prestigious award is presented by the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology to researchers who have made outstanding achievements in the fields of cancer treatment, diagnosis, and prevention, and is considered one of the highest honors in the field of cancer surgery.
This year's award recognizes President Yoshida's research on "Molecular Pathological Analysis and the Development of Multidisciplinary Treatment for Gastrointestinal Cancer," which has made significant contributions to elucidating cancer pathology at the molecular level and advancing innovative therapeutic approaches.
I am deeply honored to receive the historic and highly esteemed NAKAYAMA Koumei Award from the Japan Society of Clinical Oncology. Throughout my career, I have been involved in basic research, clinical research, and surgical treatment of gastrointestinal cancers. I demonstrated the autocrine growth of cancer cells and conducted studies that led to the development of molecular targeted therapy and minimally invasive treatments. In clinical practice, I contributed to the introduction and dissemination of laparoscopic and robotic surgery. I also developed a new adjuvant chemotherapy regimen for stage III gastric cancer (S-1 + Docetaxel therapy), which led to an advance in the treatment recommendations for gastric cancer. Furthermore, I helped establish the concept of Conversion Surgery for unresectable stage IV gastric cancer, making modest contributions to cancer research and multidisciplinary treatment development. The fact that we were able to deliver innovative treatments from Gifu University to the world is thanks to the support of patients in the Gifu region and the dedicated physicians in gastroenterological surgery and internal medicine. I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude.
