Professor MAKI Hideki of the Faculty of Regional Studies will publish "Linguistics of Japanese Language Textbooks."
"Does Japanese have an object?" This book pursues the answer to that question by examining Japanese language textbooks from the early Meiji period (1868-1912), following Taisei Hōkan1 of 1867. It also refers to English textbooks for comparison. Furthermore, it explores how subjects are treated in Japanese language textbooks, what potential issues they involve, and how parts of speech have been classified in Japanese. In addition, it looks at the criteria for classifying parts of speech, the inherent problems this classification brings, and various issues embedded in the concept of "bunsetsu" (phrase).
1) Taisei Hōkan refers to the formal return of political authority from the 15th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, to the Emperor Meiji in 1867
