A Disaster Prevention Event for Foreign Residents
Gifu University and Gifu City (Gifu City International Exchange Association) cosponsored "A Disaster Prevention Event for Foreign Residents" at Gifu University on December 14, 2019.
This event was made of two sessions. One was "What should I do when an Earthquake strikes" and the other was "How to Support Foreign Citizens."
In the "What should I do when an Earthquake strikes," participants learned how to protect themselves in earthquakes, functions of evacuation shelters, etc. In the "How to Support Foreign Citizens," they discussed what would be necessary to support foreign nationals who have different cultural backgrounds and language barriers. A total of 97 people took part in each session in earnest.
Shelters were set up at the university gymnasium. Foreign participants could capture the sense of life as evacuees whereas supporters confirmed the necessary assistance by their interviewing foreign participants. Those who were attending also gathered information for disaster prevention in the form of "stamp rally" game (going to different locations to collect stamps on a card). They tried emergency ration, operated an automated external defibrillator (AED), and confirmed the locations of evacuation sites in their communities.
"The event was very educational and informative." "I become more aware of the importance of disaster prevention." "I think I got the hang of helping those who are in need of support." These were some of the comments made by the participants when the sessions were over.
