Medical Education Development Center (MEDC) hosts the 72nd Medical Education Seminar & Workshop

The Gifu University Medical Education Development Center (MEDC) hosted the 72nd Medical Education Seminar & Workshop at Gifu University on May 25 and 26, 2019. It was held concurrently with the 20th National and Private University's Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry Administrative Staff Training. A total of 179 people including lecturers from across the country attended eight workshops and seminars for two days.

In the workshop, active discussions continued among participants over the given themes. They were: support for teaching and administrative staff collaboration, educational data, introduction of "mindfulness," behavior modification, workers' education covering multiple lines of work, general examination, post-clinical test OSCE and collaboration among different job categories. Among others, 19 people attended the session titled, "Class Design Experience Workshop for Behavior Modification: Advise how to see patients after their first visit" In this session, people first studied the theory of behavior modification for classes, then joined group talks, thought possible scenarios, took part in a role-playing, and engaged in wrap-up discussions. People were given a rare opportunity to gain insight into some of the crucial points of behavior modification to be taught in classes for students.

Associate Professor Yasushi Matsuyama from Jichi Medical University (MEDC visiting professor) was invited as a keynote speaker to the seminar, and gave a speech, "How to enhance individual autonomous studying as a lifelong learning." He said, "It is crucial for medical professionals to autonomously study and learn for life. Under any circumstances, we must strive to improve ourselves as medical professionals. Realization that we all are irreplaceable existence through experiencing Legitimate Peripheral Participation (LPP) as well as necessity of extrinsic motivation, are a must to meet this goal." His speech gave the audience ideas and inspirations as to how medical professionals should be.

As a collaboration center for medical education, MEDC holds a medical education seminar and workshop four times a year for promotion, development and improvement of medical staff education in Japan. The next 73rd Medical Education Seminar & Workshop will be held at Aichi Gakuin University (Aichi Prefecture) on August 9 and 10, 2019.
