Relay for Life (RFL) is a fundraising charity event for cancer patients, their families and supporters. Their objectives are to bolster ties between patients and local community, fight cancer together and share courage and hope with one another. The Japan Cancer Society and a working committee of each region hold this event. The RFL related events are held 49 locations in Japan and 25 countries in the world today.

On October 8 and 9, 2016, the 6th Relay for Life Japan 2016 Gifu was held in Gifu Prefecture. Gifu University Hospital is supporting the cause of RFL, and the Cancer Center of the Hospital plays a leading role in arranging and organizing the events.

The theme of the 6th Relay for Life Japan 2016 Gifu is "Speak our minds across boundaries: loving care to you all." A number of events were held at the Hospital Park and the parking lots from the afternoon of on October 8 through October 9 (events continued all through the night of October 8).

The opening ceremony kicked off at 1:00 p.m. on October 8. After greetings of the event organizers, Dr. Shinji Ogura, Director of the Hospital gave an opening speech. Soon, a rely walk started at a "survivors lap," the first lap of walking for cancer patients and former cancer patients. All of the participants kept on walking till the "last walk" on October 9.
The event venues were filled with excitement by live singing performances on stage and various programs at the team tent areas. From 2:00 p.m., Dr. Manabu Futamura, Department of Breast Surgery and Dr. Takao Takahashi, Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of Gifu University Hospital held a seminar titled, "Cancer and Genes," and around 100 people came to listen to their speeches. In the evening, a number of luminaria were placed on a walking course to remember those who have died from cancer, and to encourage those who are fighting cancer today. When they were lit, many heartfelt messages came to emerge through the transmission of light.
It started to rain at night, but let up by the morning of October 9. In the morning, the participants joined the light exercise to the accompaniment of live music.
