The 1st Cambodia-Japan Rectors' Conference

On October 20 and 21, 2016, the 1st Cambodia-Japan Rectors' Conference was held at the Cambodia-Japan Cooperation Center (CJCC), Royal University of Phnom Penh. From Gifu University, President Hisataka Moriwaki, Professor Akiyoshi Takagi of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Ken Hiramatsu of the Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences and Ms. Junko Sugaya, Director of the International Planning Division attended the conference.

The 1st Cambodia-Japan Rectors' Conference was jointly organized by Nagoya University and Royal University of Phnom Penh with an aim to further promote academic exchanges among universities between Japan and Cambodia.

Delegates from 12 Japanese universities including Gifu University, officials of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and officials of Bangkok Office of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) joined the conference, whereas representatives of 20 Cambodian universities attended the conference.

In the following three sessions, representatives of the participating universities discussed and exchanged opinions in accordance with the given themes.

  • Session 1: Educational and Research Exchange
  • Session 2: Improving the Quality of University Faculty
  • Session 3: Career Support for Students

President Moriwaki introduced Gifu University Rearing Program for Basin Water Environmental Leasers (BWEL) at Session 3. This program is designed to produce environmental leaders (both at home and abroad) who can properly assess and evaluate issues related to the water environment from multiple perspectives. Such environmental leaders are expected to address problems of water quality, water resource and irrigation management and protection of ecosystem that many developing countries are facing today. These leaders will plan and implement strategic solutions to the issues and prevent potential risks to the environment. Already 3 students from Cambodia completed the program, and are playing a crucial role in the government organizations such as the environment ministry in Cambodia through utilization of their academic skills and achievements.

Mr. Va Vuthy and Ms. So Thavin who completed the program came to join the Cambodia-Japan International Student Alumni Association meeting which was also held in Cambodia during the conference. They were happily reunited with their former supervisors, Professor Takagi and Professor Hiramatsu. In the meeting, they discussed and shared opinions concerning the future academic exchanges.
