[International Month in Fall 2015] Potluck Party

On November 27, 2015, the Gifu University Head Office for Glocalization (GHOGL) held a potluck party at Shukai Hall, Yanagido Kaikan building which was attended by international and Japanese students, teaching and administrative staff and their families. The participants brought their own foods and dishes and share them with one another.
A potluck party is held every year as a part of International Month events. It provides people with an opportunity to know about unique cuisines and food culture around the world through English. About 40 people attended this year and they enjoyed traditional dishes and desserts of UK, China and Japan, etc.

In the party, the participants first explained foods and sweets they brought in English and started to enjoy conversations. Next, they were divided into small groups and engaged in a "pub quiz," a game highly popular in the UK. The simple question-and-answer style, i.e. one asks questions and the rests figure out the right answers, went well over with the participants and many positive feedbacks were expressed in the questionnaire results. They read: "Questions were rather difficult, but a lot of fun." "I would like to make the same questions to my friends," etc. Because each group was made up of people with different nationalities, they formed a strong international friendship through the game. Some even suggested that students could arrange a pub quiz next year and looking forward to many exciting questions.
All the participants looked very happy with not only a pub quiz but also meals and lively conversations. One wrote in the questionnaire, "I truly appreciate the occasion as I met many people tonight whom I would never have a chance to meet without this event."
A potluck party - an informal get-together of people by way of food - is expected to attract many more people next year.
